Physical Characteristics

Object Description: Pack of NIL cigarettes in a blue box with white text on the lid. Box is rectangular, oriented horizontally. Lid lifts up and has an eagle with outstretched wings with the text "REGIE" below it. White text is also on the front edge of the lid. Underside of lid is silver with blue text. Cigarettes are underneath silver foil. Each cigarette has white paper with brown text on it.

Marks: Lid: "NIL / AUSTRIA / ZIGARETTENFABRIK MÜNCHEN" Front edge: "25 ZIGARETTEN" Back edge: "AUSTRIA ZIGARETTENFABRIK MÜNCHEN" Underside of lid: "Nil" followed by paragraph of German text Cigarettes: "REGIE / NIL / R 736"

These NIL brand cigarettes were produced by the Austria Cigarette Factory in Munich and recovered from the U-505. Smoking was not permitted within the U-505. Sailors were required to smoke cigarettes from the deck while the boat was surfaced.
