About: U.S. Navy Silver Star Medallion awarded to Chester Mocarski

About: U.S. Navy Silver Star Medallion awarded to Chester Mocarski

This Silver Star Medallion was awarded to U.S. Navy sailor, Chester Mocarski, one of the June, 4, 1944 crew members of the USS Pillsbury who made up the first party to board the U-505 after the sub was abandoned by the German crew. Mocarski was wounded upon boarding the sub. The medal was for "gallantry in action." He and the other boarding party crew were risking their lives by being the first to board the U-505 as they had no way of knowing if the sub was rigged to explode.
