Captain D.E. Hampton led the second salvage party from the USS Guadalcanal to the U-505. For his service and duties, Hampton received the Legion of Merit, one of the United States’ highest military honors, typically awarded to members of the Armed Forces of the United States for exceptionally outstanding conduct in the performance of service, especially during wartime.
