About: Miniature Petit Point Tapestry, Fairy Castle
About: Miniature Petit Point Tapestry, Fairy Castle
This is one of five King Arthur-themed “tapestries” found in the Dining Room of the Fairy Castle. This one depicts the presentation of Galahad, one of King Arthur’s knights before King Arthur, Guinevere, and other knights at the Round Table. These “tapestries” were commissioned from Madame Jorey, a master needleworker in Vienna in the pre-World War II years. The stitches are referred to as “petit point” and are so small, one needs a magnifying glass to see them in detail. While the work took many months to complete, the set of five “tapestries” was finally hung in the Dining Hall in 1935. The theme of the Dining Room throughout is King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. The dining table is modeled after the Round Table and the back of each chair is emblazoned with the heraldic shield of each knight. Each place setting includes a gold dining service as well as goblets, plates, and wine glasses. The ceiling is raftered and is made from burnished walnut. The woodwork of the ceiling matches the inlaid wood of the floor and polished marble walls. A walnut sideboard and a buffet hold further china and drinkware fit for a King.
