About: ‘Pluto and Proserpina’ Miniature Statue, Fairy Castle
Located in the Great Hall, this is a miniature ivory statue of Gianlorenzo Bernini’s (1598–1680) statue entitled Abduction of Proserpina. The statue depicts the Greek myth of the goddess Proserpina being seized and taken to the underworld by the god Pluto (in Greek, they would be Persephone and Hades). The original sculpture is located in Rome at the Galleria Borghese.
The Great Hall with floating staircase is a grand room with many treasures. The floor is composed of ivory carved with rose vines which carry up onto the great pillars supporting the ceiling. The ceiling includes domes painted by Helga Brabon of characters from fairytales of both the Grimm brothers and Hans Christian Anderson. The Great Hall includes many hanging wall paintings as well as many rare treasures gathered from around the world.
