About: Miniature Ice Skates, Fairy Castle

About: Miniature Ice Skates, Fairy Castle

This pair of silver ice skates from the Great Hall of the Fairy Castle, represent the skates form the novel Hans Brinker, or The Silver Skates. This novel was written by American author Mary Mapes Dodge in 1865 and is about a pair of beautiful silver skates awarded to the winner of a Dutch ice skating race.

The Great Hall with floating staircase is a grand room with many treasures. The floor is composed of ivory carved with rose vines which carry up onto the great pillars supporting the ceiling. The ceiling includes domes painted by Helga Brabon of characters from fairytales of both the Grimm brothers and Hans Christian Anderson. The Great Hall includes many hanging wall paintings as well as many rare treasures gathered from around the world.
