About: Maize and Blue University of Michigan Solar Automobile Racer

The 1993 Maize & Blue solar car was built by the University of Michigan Solar Car Team between 1990 and 1993. This car is powered by an electric motor that receives its electricity through solar panels that harness the energy of the sun. It competed in Sunrayce 93 (the predecessor to the North American Solar Challenge) in June 1993, starting in Texas and ending in Minnesota, crossing the 1,100-mile stretch on solar power alone. Maize & Blue finished in first place in the national race in a field of thirty-four teams, giving the University of Michigan its second consecutive national championship in solar car racing. The Maize & Blue solar car finished 11th in the World Solar Car Challenge in Australia in the same year.

Many of the nearly 300 students who invested more than 70,000 hours over three years to design, build, test, and race this car to a national championship victory, went on to become successful entrepreneurs and businesspeople – including Larry Page, co-founder of Google.
