About: NBC Chimes Glockenspiel

About: NBC Chimes Glockenspiel

This portable glockenspiel is a part of the percussion family of musical instruments. A mallet is used to strike a set of tuned metal bars that create bell-like sounds. In fact, the name for these instruments comes from the German words "glocken" (bells) and "spiel" (play).

This glockesnspiel was used by NBC radio in the 1930s for their radio programs and was played by the station to introduce radio shows. The glockenspiel has been an integral part of of NBC's branding with its distinct tune. There is currently another glockenspiel found at NBC Studios in Rockefeller Plaza that is featured during on-air segments, and that has also been a part of the station's New Year's Eve broadcasts.
