About: Playpipe

About: Playpipe

Made by the Akron Brass Company, this double-handled brass firefighting playpipe from the early twentieth century was part of general firefighting equipment. It connected the end of the fire hose with the nozzle. Invented in the late nineteenth century, playpipes are still in use today. They have evolved into a tool that allows firefighters to measure and compare the pressure of flowing liquid coming out of the hydrant and fire hose.
