About: Model of ‘Gradenigo’ Ship

About: Model of ‘Gradenigo’ Ship

This is a model of the 17th century Venetian ship Gradenigo. The original ship was built by workers in Venice’s great shipyard, Arsenale. This oar-and sail-powered ship was built to be used  on the Mediterranean Sea in the 1650s. In battle, galley ships like this would line up-side by side and fire their guns forward at the enemy. When the battle reached a climax, fighting men would run across the ship’s armored beak, to board and dominate enemy ships.
