About: Lagoon Watercraft Ticket
About: Lagoon Watercraft Ticket
This ticket allowed access to the lagoon near Northerly Island which was at the center of the 1933 Century of Progress Exposition and offered spectacular views and activities for every visitor. During the 1933 Century of Progress Exposition, the lagoon offered boat rides that carried visitors across the water to Northerly Island. Visitors were also able to cross the lagoon via the Sky Ride, Science Bridge, and other pedestrian bridges. They all offered views of the various exhibition buildings along the shore including the Hall of Science which towered high over the other structures on the mainland side of the lagoon, and the unusual Electrical Building, near the southern tip of Northerly Island.
Throughout the exposition, organizers continued to develop the lagoon by staging boat races and other events. Some unusual boats were added which included a replica of a Viking ship and tours of ships from visiting navies. This colorful ticket with an image of a Viking ship, may be a reference to a trip across the lagoon in the Viking ship replica. The lagoon was also home to the illuminated Century of Progress Exposition Fountain which some argued was the world’s largest fountain, stretching 1,000 feet into the water with a 75-foot diameter ring. The fountain of colorful lights consumed the power of 150,000 homes. The colorful lights of both the fountain and exteriors of the surrounding buildings gave the exposition the nickname “Rainbow City.”
