About: United States Crayon Co. Junior Handy Crayon Set
About: United States Crayon Co. Junior Handy Crayon Set
This is a red and blue crayon box made by the United States Crayon Company specifically for the 1933 Century of Progress Exposition. During the Exposition, many international, domestic, and local Chicago companies sold or handed out souvenirs to visitors to advertise their business and products. The United States Crayon Company was a Chicago based crayon company found in 1854 and located in Cicero, Illinois. The company primarily made industrial crayons under the name Handy. However, for the Exposition, they manufactured various sets of Junior Handy crayon sets for children.
The crayon box displays a small image of a skyline and a log cabin encompassed by a cloud. Inside the crayon box are seven crayons: orange, purple, blue, green, yellow, red, and brown. Each crayon is wrapped with paper advertising that the crayons are waterproof and will mark anything. The wrapper also promotes the company as makers of everything related to crayons and tailors’ chalk. The United States Crayon Company was the longest running crayon company in the United States that was never bought out or merged. The company recently closed in the 2000s.
