About: McDonald's Cigna Band-Aid
About: McDonald's Cigna Band-Aid
During the 1990s, Cigna and McDonald’s worked together to promote the flu vaccine. Both companies have histories of promoting health lifestyles and immunity. Cigna is an American multinational healthcare and insurance company with a history dating back to the Insurance Company of North America (INA) and Connecticut General Life Insurance Company (CG). Established in Philadelphia in 1792, INA helped rebuild Chicago after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 by being among the few insurance companies to pay its losses in full. CG, established in 1865, and INA were both at the forefront in developing employee health insurance in the early 20th century. Both companies continued until merging in 1982 to create CIGNA as it is known today.
During the 1990s and early 2000s, the United States experienced an increase in childhood obesity forcing many restaurants to rethink their children’s menus and market healthier food options and lifestyles. This band-aid features McDonald’s golden arches and CIGNA’s tree of life logo with the motto “Immunity for Healthy Lives” to promote a healthy lifestyle. This band aid was not the last time McDonald’s would use its brand to promote healthy living and immunity. During the Covid-19 pandemic, McDonald’s partnered with the White House to encourage customers to get vaccinated. In July of 2021, McDonald’s rolled out cups and stickers directing customers to vaccine.org, a site with information on how to protect the public from COVID-19 and where to make a vaccine appointment.
