About: Supermarine Mark 1A Spitfire Airplane

About: Supermarine Mark 1A Spitfire Airplane

During World War II, the Supermarine Spitfire Mark 1-A was England’s greatest defense against a German invasion. The fighter's speed and maneuverability was impressive in combat and its enhanced aerodynamics made it one of the most important military planes ever produced. Spitfires took out hundreds of German fighters during the Battle of Britain in 1940.

This Mark 1-A is one of the few surviving Spitfires to have flown in the Battle of Britain. The swastikas on the cockpit's starboard side mark the five German "kills" credited to this airplane. The eight machine guns built into the body of the wings helped it take out enemy fighters. The Merlin engine (named after a bird of prey) was designed by Rolls-Royce and provided great power and speed.
